Artist interview: Samplesound meet Samuel Dan

Hi Samuel, Can you tell us a bit about your musical background? How did you get into club music?
Hi! I started playing drums in a band when I was a teenager, we played mainly pop-rock, basically covers, but I learnt to play drums by my own, never took a lesson, so I was obviously not a good drummer haha I discovered electronic music later and felt in love with the proper electro sound from artists such as David Carretta, The Hacker, Miss Kittin, Anthony Rother and many others. I also started to listen to a lot of techno music. All that evolved in what I mainly do today, energetic and groovy Tech-House..

Can you talk us through the process of creating your sample pack?

Sure, all these ideas I've included in this sample pack are actually new tracks I started for myself. But as I can't release all the music I've done, I decided to use some of my favourite ideas for my first sample pack, I hope the people like it!

How did you approach it and what was your workflow like?

I haven't got a specific workflow when working on new ideas, I usually start working on the groove, but sometimes I find a synth-sound that I love and I start from there, or sometimes it can be a vocal. I always create the main elements of the idea/track first, and once I get something I like, I start arranging everything.

What hardware and software did you use to create the sounds?
I've used many software and hardware options over the years. At the moment I'm working ITB, using some midi controllers such as Maschine and a midi keyboard. I find this combination to be the best for my workflow today.

Is there any particular software or hardware that you can’t live without?
I couldn't live without my main monitoring system. That's the key element of my studio right now, I'm working with the combination of the Kii THREE and the Trinnov ST2 Pro, couldn't be happier.

Were there any artists, labels or tracks that influenced the music you make today?
Yes of course, as I commented before, I've listened/worked on many different styles, so there are a lot of artists that have influenced me over the years, Anthony Rother, Richie Hawtin, Gaiser, Audion... and most recently artists such as Dont Blink or Biscits.

Any upcoming projects you are excited about?
Yes! I've launched my own label ERYN back in 2016, but last year, due to this crazy situation we're living right now, I decided to take a little break; but I got plenty of new music ready to be released on the label this 2021, stay tuned!
